Rovers double swoop

Gresley Rovers last night completed the signing of two new players – but missed out on another.
Former Worcester City and Paget defender Jason Darkes moved in from Beazer Midlands outfit Dudley Town while utility man Michael Guest rejoined the club from Bromsgrove Rovers.

But Rovers will not be signing defender Peter Farrow from Ilkeston. Farrow a Loughborough University student was a target for Moat boss Frank Northwood last week but has opted to join Shepshed Charterhouse.

Northwood said last night: “We’re looking to get a bit of young blood at the club. The Darkes lad is only 20 and we’re hoping he will provide some of that for us.”

Guest, 27, rejoins Rovers after failing to secure a first team spot at Bromsgrove.

Said Northwood: “He’s put his injury problems behind him and says he’s fit as he’s ever been. He should give us options at the back and in midfield.”

Neither Darkes, a former Everton junior, nor Guest is eligible for tomorrow’s trip to United Counties out fit Raunds Town (3pm), however.

Rovers meet the Northamptonshire side for the third time in nine months aiming for a hat trick of victories.

Said Northwood: “ The one thing we’ve never achieved while I’ve been at the club is a place in the first round proper of the FA Cup.

“We’re hoping this could be our season, but we’re taking nothing for granted. Raunds are a very dangerous side, but we’ll be looking for a win.”
