Heart-broken Gresley Rovers were still licking their wounds today after crashing off the Wembley trail.
Rovers’ hopes of reaching the FA Vase final for the second successive season were ruined when Newcastle Town converted an extra-time penalty.

It gave the underdogs from the Potteries a 3-2 victory after they had trailed 2-1 with only three minutes of normal time remaining.

Angry Rovers’ boss Frank Northwood warned last night: “I can promise our supporters that I will deliver a couple of bombshells this week.”

He snapped: “I do believe Gresley Rovers played their worst game of football for five years. Other than Brian Beresford and Stuart Evans, I don’t feel sorry for the players but I do feel sorry for our supporters who were once again tremendous. I ask them to continue to back us.

”I worked very hard at my football and if players cannot do the same they have no right to wear a Gresley Rovers shirt.”
