Life in the Unibond League starts for Retford United on Saturday with the visit of Gresley Rovers to Cannon Park.Manager Peter Duffield believes his squad are ready for the new challenge following a lengthy pre-season schedule.
"I am happy with their fitness after a long pre-season," said the Badgers boss facing his first competitive match in charge.

"The lads are shaping up well having been back since the end of June."

Duffield has added a few new faces but the basis of the squad remains from last season's successful Northern Counties campaign.

"I didn't want to dismantle the squad because they have done so well," said the United boss.

"Those I have brought in have shown their worth and although I might have liked to bring in another centre half I have learnt that Ben Chambers can do a job there if needs be."

Duffield has no intentions of making bold claims about his side's prospects but believes they are well equipped to deal with the challenge.

"I will know more in the next couple of weeks where we are but I have players who have been at a higher level and some who haven't who are coming together well."

Gresley are long-time Unibond members and Duffield watched them in action on Saturday.

"They are a big side but we won't fear anyone and it may well be a case of having to calm my players down because they are so enthusiastic."

And Duffield believes his side's pace could be a key asset.

"We are quick throughout the side and I believe that could be a real bonus for us because you don't often find that at this level."

The only setback for United has been the number of injuries picked up in the pre-season programme.

Speedy striker Mark Ashton is waiting to see a specialist to determine the extent of damage to his knee having been particularly impressive during the warm-up games.

Defender Rob Burton is also ruled out with a sore groin while key midfielder Ryan Ford is hoping to shake off a sore calf before Saturday.

Those aside, United should be at full strength as they look to cement their place in the semi-professional ranks.
