Slater Signs For Ninth Season

The Captain of Gresley FC, Carl Slater, has turned down an offer from Mickleover Sports to stay with the Moatmen for a ninth season.
Mickleover Sports are preparing for their first season in the Premier Division of the Evo-Stick League and had hoped that Slater would have been drawn by playing at a higher level.

The midfielder, who is also a fans favourite, kept Gresley informed that Sports wanted to speak but he had a change of heart and decided to try and improve on Gresley FC’s first season. Slater has always found it hard to settle away from South Derbyshire and a brief spell at Bromsgrove in 2008 is a good example of this.

The Manager of Gresley FC, Gary Norton, said, “Carl is always very honest and he told me that Mickleover were interested and I gave him my backing to speak with them. We’ve always had a good relationship with Sports and I think if I was in the position they are in I’d be looking at players like Carl who should be playing higher up the non-league pyramid.”

“Carl also bumped into a Director of Gresley FC who reminded him of previous occasions when things haven’t worked out for him away from the Moat Ground and I think he decided there and then he wasn’t going to follow this up.”

Carl Slater explained a bit more about the decision, “Many things were going round in my mind. Not least how I would feel if Gresley had a very good season, and I wasn’t part of it, and Mickleover struggle because they have made such rapid progress to where they are now.”
