Rovers count the walking wounded

Gresley Rovers’ manager Frank Northwood introduces three new signings for tonight’s Banks’s League meeting with Tipton Town at the Moat Ground (7.30 pm).
Northwood, with four first choice players out of the reckoning, brings in former Wolves midfielder Hughie Atkinson, Stoke based striker Dave Sutton and Neil Costello from Friar Lane Old Boys of the Leicestershire Senior League.

Sutton, 20, has two years’ Central League experience with Stoke City and has turned out for Crewe in Division Four this season.

Costello is a former Hinckley Town midfielder who scored two goals from midfield against Rovers in an earlier meeting between the two clubs.

Both players will sign for Rovers today. Atkinson, a Black Country trainee policeman, signed two weeks ago for the Moat Ground club.

Formerly with Wolves and Exeter, Atkinson is a Republic of Ireland Under-21 International.

Northwood has been forced to bring in a posse of new players because of a rash of injuries after Tuesday’s League Cup semi-final victory over Oldbury.

Winger Clive Arthur, withdrawn in the second half on Tuesday, is currently on crutches after damaging ligaments. Striker Martin Devaney aggravated a groin strain, and defender Mark Bromley has shingles.

Ian Earley, substitute on Tuesday is unavailable.
