Northwood swoops to get his man

Gresley Rovers manager Frank Northwood swooped to bolster his first team squad within minutes of the Moatmen’s FA Cup exit at Tamworth on Saturday.
Northwood snapped up former Tamworth, Atherstone and Mile Oak central defender Steve French and immediately announced that his new capture would make his debut in Saturday’s Banks’s League home game against Wolverhampton United.

“Steve will go straight in to partner Steve Dolby and we will probably switch Mark Bromley to another position,” said Northwood.

“I tried to sign Steve early last season but he had already signed for Mile Oak and agreed to honour his commitment to them.”

French has spent the summer coaching and working in America.

And marksman Brian Beresford is unlikely to be back in action for another two weeks.

Beresford has an appointment with a specialist next Monday and is hoping to be given the go-ahead to resume light training.

“I’m still suffering from blurred vision,” said Beresford, who was hit in the eye by the ball at point-blank range in the pre-season friendly against Atherstone.
