Final spot for Rovers

Gresley Rovers made sure of a cup final double on Saturday when they completed a 4-1 aggregate win over Hinckley Athletic in the Banks’s League Cup semi-final.
Rovers, already booked to meet neighbours Stapenhill in the Derbyshire Senior Cup final, mastered tricky conditions to secure a 2-1 second leg win and now meet Halesowen Harriers or Lye Town – currently tied at 1-1 after their first leg at Lye – in the final.

And Rovers skipper Dean Page, whose first half shot turned into the net by a defender to give Gresley the lead is anticipating a meeting with Halesowen.

“I expect it will be Harriers in the final and I’m backing us for a cup double – plus the league title of course,” he said afterwards.

Manager Frank Northwood was pleased that his side had returned to winning ways after Tuesday’s 4-0 drubbing at Hinckley Town.

“I thought the lads showed a lot of commitment today and we certainly made a lot of chances – I was very pleased,” he said.

“I know we missed a lot but we’ve saved a few for our trip here on Easter Monday for a league game. Once again it’s nice to be in a cup final and I’m especially pleased for the fans.”
