Beresford goes back to Gresley

Brian Beresford, local football’s Mr Goals, is on the brink of a shock move back to Gresley Rovers.
Beresford was sacked by Gresley boss Frank Northwood 18 months ago after a clash of personality.

But Northwood is prepared “to let bygones be bygones” in an effort to reclaim the celebrated striker from neighbours Stapenhill.

After last night’s 2-1 victory in a friendly at Tamworth, the Gresley boss pronounced: “We’ve put in seven days in for Beresford and he will be joining us.”

Swans manager Mick Allsopp told Beresford on Tuesday night that he was free to join another club, so he is expected to waive the notice.

That could mean Beresford will pull on a Gresley shirt again on Saturday when the Moatmen open their Banks’s League campaign at home to Westfields.

Said Northwood: “Brian loves this club and he’s missed not being part of it. What happened yesterday does not matter to me. It’s what happens tomorrow that counts.”

Rovers will be hoping that Beresford can repeat the form which earned him more than 80 goals in two full seasons at the Moat Ground and a staggering 50-plus tally to help Stapenhill to a Leicestershire Senior League and Cup double.
