Rovers double blow

Gresley Rovers’ star defender Dean Page is set to miss the first five weeks of the new Banks’s League campaign.
And, in another blow to manager Frank Northwood ‘s plans, striker Tracey Norton also looks certain to be an early-season absentee.

Both players go into hospital shortly for cartilage operations which will rule them out until the end of August at least. Page, however, faces an even longer lay off because he must then serve a three-week suspension as a result of bookings accumulated.

Northwood remained philosophical about the loss of two key players.

“Obviously I would rather have them in than out of my squad, but we are covered well in both departments,” he said.

Rovers face three Beazer Homes League sides and arch-rivals Stapenhill in 11 days next month.

They entertain Premier Division newcomers Atherstone United on August 5th: travel to Stapenhill in the Bass Centenary Challenge on August 8th; clash with Burton Albion in the Johnson Cup at the Moat Ground on August 12th and wind up their pre-season programme with a trip to FA Vase holders Tamworth three days later.

Rovers’ preparations start with a trip to Coleshill Town next Saturday.
