Gresley Rovers face a desperate race against time to get their Moat Ground home up to scratch for a renewed bid to gain promotion to the Beazer Homes League.
Rovers failed to gain Midland Division status last season after Beazer secretary Den Strudwick gave their historic old ground the thumbs down.

And with the next round of inspections only two months away, Rovers have still to carry out most of the work needed to fulfil requirements.

Gresley chairman Peter Hall admitted today: “We’re cutting a bit fine, but we’ve a committee meeting tomorrow night to finalise our plans. Hopefully the work will be done by the time the ground is inspected.”

The club’s major project is to build a new stand at the front of the dressing room block, which will incorporate a caged walkway for players and match officials.

Said Hall: “We scrapped our original ideas to build onto the existing stand. Now we’re planning a completely new stand and hope to meet the contractors later in the week. After that it will be a question of applying for planning permission and getting the work done as quickly as possible.”

Competition for places in the Beazer Midland Division is hotter than ever before. Gresley’s Banks’s League rivals Rocester, Hinckley Town and Halesowen Harriers are all applying for promotion and expect to achieve the necessary grading.

Also firmly in the frame are Scoreline Combination title favourites Boldmere StMichaels, who are in the throes of erecting floodlights at Church Road.

Stapenhill, the local hopes in the Combination, are thought to have investigated the possibility of floodlights at Edge Hill but have not made their plans public.
