Gresley Rovers vs Chasetown

Gresley started the game with a more settled side than from Wednesday night. Even so, we played a poor half by the standard we have now set ourselves. Passing in particular was very poor. We gave far too many away, sold each other way to many suicide balls and in the first twenty minutes created nothing dangerous at all. The passing improved as the half went on but still no killer passes in the final third.

The game was fairly even but with about five minutes remaining Harrison gave away a poor pass and by the time he recovered the Chasetown lad had slipped in his forward whose shot hit the bar only to fall at the feet of their other forward who tapped home to give them a one - nil lead.

A lot was said at half time and a few changes were made. Gresley played a much better second half, Freestone was unlucky to be judged offside when one on one with the keeper - very questionable.

Chasetown defended very well though and their keeper in particular had a very solid game, making some fine saves.

As time ran out Gresley changed to a three-four-three and went for goals. Pembo made a fine one-on-one stop as they broke away with everyone forward.

In the dying minutes Gresley looked certain to score as the ball dropped to Johnnie Guthrie with the keeper on the floor after his initial stop. Guthrie tapped home only to see his shot saved with both hands from a Chasetown defender and then the keeper dive on the stop. The linesman was straight in front of it and everyone expected the decision, but to everyone's amazement it was over-looked.

With seconds remaining a fine corner was planted on the head of Paul Grosse who put wide when a goal looked certain.

A disappointing result indeed for the home side, with the visitors looking and sounding extremely pleased with their result. Gresley could have won it and deserved a draw, but must now learn that they have to continue to work hard if they are to continue their results. Sides now look at them as a quality opposition and play accordingly so much work is still to be done.
