Gresley travelled to Blackheath and lost 3-0 in the Midland Floodlit Youth League. Starting for the first time for Gresley was John Short who’s on loan from Derby County, Chris Vernon signed from Burton and Chris Bennett from Sutton Town.

In the early stages of the game it was an even affair and Gresley could have found their self 1-0 up when a great ball into the box was missed by Tom Bartram at the far post. Midway through the first half Tumelty the Blackheath No. 7 broke down the right and crossed for Jones to hit a low drive into the bottom corner giving Short no chance.

5 minutes later Farrel went passed two Gresley defenders into the box and was fouled by Danny Foster. The penalty was converted giving Blackheath a 2-0 lead.

Gresley were still trying to play football and were unlucky not to get a goal back when a shot hit the post and fell into the keepers arms. Blackheath then went straight down into the Gresley box and with the Gresley defence unable to clear the ball Blackheath’s Farrell pounced to knock the ball into the net.

In the second half Gresley tightened up and played well creating 3 or 4 good chances but again some poor defending let Gresley down. Manager Bob Corner said the second half was much better and the performances of Tom Skinner and Danny Foster were pleasing and with six sixteen year olds in the team due to injuries and work commitments there a lot of pluses that could be taken from the game. Bob said more new players will be coming to Gresley and he feels one or two players could soon be stepping up to the reserve squad.
